Two glasses and a third chair

Fiction.
The waiter set down two glasses and asked whether anyone else was joining them.
"Probably not," she said.
They had spent a whole week debating whether to invite a third person. Now the empty chair seemed to take up more room than either of them.
He laughed first. Then she did.
"Let's have dinner," she said. "We can be very adventurous about dessert."
The waiter returned with the menu. Nobody mentioned the chair again.
