Friend or stranger? Neither sounds simple.

A familiar face may feel safer. Until you have to see them at Sunday lunch.

T

I keep seeing people say a friend is safer than a stranger. Really?

R

Safer in one way, messier in six others.

D

At least you know a friend's not completely unhinged.

K

You know how they behave as a friend. You don't automatically know how they'll behave in this situation.

M

The problem for me is what happens AFTER. Like, you still see them at birthdays.

T

Exactly. Nothing happens and you've still changed every dinner party.

D

A stranger might be worse. You have no idea if they're discreet.

R

You also don't have to pretend you didn't have a complicated conversation with them at someone's BBQ.

K

Maybe stop looking for 'the safe category'. Look for a respectful person, a clear agreement and a way to leave.

T

That sounds like a lot of logistics for something meant to be spontaneous.

M

Maybe it SHOULD have logistics.

R

Spontaneous is nice when picking wine. Not necessarily when three people's feelings are involved.

D

I'd still want to meet somewhere neutral first. Nothing at home.

M

Same. If the coffee feels weird, great, we've had coffee. End of story.

T

I think coffee is the only sensible answer anyone's given.
