What does watching change?
From From the Threads, a Club column. About this column ↗
Two people have discussed an experience involving someone else. One wants to be present. The other would rather tell the story afterwards.
They're looking at the same situation from very different positions.
Being there might feel reassuring. It might also make it harder to look away from something unexpected. Hearing about it later gives you distance, but leaves gaps that imagination can fill.
The broad word family around "watch" appeared somewhere in 4,513 of the archived threads. That is not 4,513 votes for watching. It's a reminder of how often seeing and being seen enter the discussion.
A better question than "Do you want to watch?" might be: "If something surprised you, would you rather see it happen or talk about it when we're alone?"
Those are two different kinds of vulnerability.
