Window light is not a personality

Soft window light has become almost a visual shortcut for sincerity. Add a film grain filter and everybody suddenly looks "authentic". But the light is doing a technical job. It doesn't tell you whether the moment was genuine. A staged portrait can be honest about being staged. A blurry snapshot can be utterly misleading. What gives a photograph meaning is often what you know about it, and what the maker is willing to tell you. Use whatever light works. Just don't ask the window to do all the storytelling.
