The sharpest portrait is not always the one you keep
From Photo Letters, a Club column. About this column ↗
Two frames from the same afternoon.
In one, the eyes are perfectly sharp, the hair is neat and the person knows where the camera is.
In the other, they're mid-laugh. One hand is moving. The focus is a little behind.
Which one do you print?
The technically cleaner photograph might win in a catalogue. The second might be the one that makes you remember the room.
These are different jobs. It's fine to keep photographs for different reasons.
