"Maybe" is not a reservation
From Between Us, a Club column. About this column ↗
"Maybe one day" is a lovely sentence until someone starts treating it as a calendar entry.
A partner talks about something they might enjoy. The other begins researching dates, venues and logistics. Suddenly a pleasant conversation has turned into a plan.
Nobody necessarily meant to push. The pace has just changed without being discussed.
A useful reply to "maybe" is sometimes: "Do you want to keep this as a fantasy, or are we actually planning something?"
The answer might be different next month. That's all right.
The awkwardness of asking beats the awkwardness of discovering you've been making plans alone.
